Pumpkin
    Our Story

    Built for the firms that
    keep America honest.

Accounting and professional firms run on trust, deadlines, and systems nobody notices until they break. We build the systems: phones that get answered, security that holds in February, IT that stays boring on purpose, and marketing that brings the right clients through the door.

    Aaron Waters

CEO & Founder, Pumpkin Business Services

If you've read anything on this site, you've read Aaron. He writes the blog, the guides, and most of this page. Before Pumpkin, he started a computer repair business out of high school, spent three years in the military, and helped grow a Monterey managed IT provider into a strong local technology leader. Then he sold his stake and started over, on purpose.

"I spent years helping companies get through federally regulated cybersecurity compliance. The firms that struggled weren't careless. They just never had anyone explain it plainly. Pumpkin is my attempt to fix that, and to give firms a straight path into AI while we're at it."

    The Backstory

    How we got here.

Pumpkin didn't start as a business plan. It started as a pattern Aaron kept noticing: professional and financial firms doing careful work on top of technology and compliance they'd been left to guess at. Everything below is what led to doing something about it.

    High School

    The first business

Aaron started a computer repair company straight out of high school. Broken machines, real customers, no safety net. It taught him the thing that still runs Pumpkin: fix the actual problem, and people come back.

    Early Career

    IT consulting & deeper expertise

Repair work grew into consulting on infrastructure, networking, and technology strategy for businesses that couldn't afford to get it wrong. Every engagement made the same lesson clearer. Companies don't need more technology. They need someone who'll tell them which parts matter.

    Military Service

    Three years serving the country

Three years in the military added the habits clients now take for granted: precision under pressure, and doing things correctly when nobody's checking. (That second one is most of what compliance actually is.)

    Post-Military

    Growing a local technology leader

After the service, Aaron joined a young managed IT provider in Monterey, California, and helped grow it into a strong local technology leader with a reputation for reliability and genuine client partnership. Years of firm clients, firm deadlines, and firm-sized budgets. That's where the small-firm math sank in.

    2024

    Pumpkin is born

Aaron sold his stake in the Monterey MSP and went straight at the problem he'd watched for years: professional and financial firms wrestling with legal and cybersecurity compliance nobody had ever explained plainly. Pumpkin builds the systems, support, and applications that fix that, across four service lines: Growth & Marketing, VoIP & Communications, IT Security & Compliance, and AI & Automation. All of it pointed at the same kind of firm.

    Our Mission

    Every professional firm deserves
    confidence in their compliance
and a clear path into AI.

Legal and cybersecurity compliance is genuinely hard, and most of what's written about it seems designed to sell fear. We build the systems and support that let professional and financial firms operate securely, prove their compliance, and adopt AI without betting the practice on a vendor's promises.

    Compliant

Built around IRS Publication 4557, SOC 2, GLBA, and the rest of the alphabet that regulates professional and financial firms.

    Confident

You should know exactly where your firm stands, not hope. Our systems and reporting exist so you're never guessing about your compliance posture.

    AI-Ready

AI adoption without the hype cycle. We help firms pick what's real, skip what isn't, and stay competitive while the technology keeps moving.

    Our Culture

    How we actually work.

Nobody here has read our culture deck, because we never made one. What we have is a short list of things we won't trade away when a deadline gets close, and a habit of noticing when we're about to.

    Client-First Always

Every decision gets the same test: does it genuinely serve the client, today and five years from now? If it only serves us, it doesn't ship.

    Integrity Over Everything

We handle sensitive financial data every day. Compliance is the floor. Trust is the standard, and it's a much higher bar.

    Bias Toward Action

We don't wait for perfect. We ship carefully, then fix what the real world finds, because waiting has a cost nobody puts on an invoice.

    Radical Transparency

We say what we mean and own what we break. Clients get honesty, including the uncomfortable kind, because spin costs more than bad news.

    Relentless Curiosity

The technology landscape doesn't sit still, so neither do we. Somebody here is always testing the next tool so your firm doesn't have to.

    Community & Access

Enterprise-grade tools shouldn't be reserved for firms with 200 seats. We build for the practice of six, because that's most of the profession.

We hire for character and train for skill.

Technical ability is the easy thing to check. The hard thing, and the thing we actually screen for, is whether someone will tell a client an inconvenient truth at 4pm on a Friday instead of letting it wait until Monday. Certifications we can pay for. That, we can't.

    Vision for the Future

Where we think this is going.

The tedious third of a firm's week is becoming automatable. That's the whole shift, and it's quieter than the conference keynotes make it sound. But it compounds. Firms that started two years ago are already taking clients from firms still keying W-2s by hand, and the gap widens every quarter.

So we're building toward one system instead of four vendors. Phones, security and compliance, IT, and the marketing that fills the calendar, all talking to each other. Anything can demo well in July. The real test comes at 9pm on a Tuesday in February, when your staff is buried and a client wants an answer now.

Some of what's on the roadmap won't survive contact with real firms. We'll say so when it happens.

    01

    AI Receptionist

A 24/7 intelligent front desk for every firm, without adding headcount.

    02

    Predictive Compliance

Real-time risk scoring on every client file, so you see your exposure before a regulator does.

    03

    Unified Intelligence

One platform where phones, security, and AI actually talk to each other.

    04

    AI-Driven Growth

A practical path into AI for firms that want to stay competitive without betting the practice on hype.

    Start with a conversation.

Solo practice or forty people, the first call goes the same way. You tell us what's breaking. We tell you what we'd fix first, what we'd leave alone for now, and roughly what it costs. No deck.
